Project introduction in Mongolian - please click for pages one, two and three.

Gobi Oasis Tree Planting Project would like to thank for Panoramic Journeys British Tour Operator for donating our staff salaries during the implementation of our project by the Forestry Department of the Mongolian Government Implementation Agency, Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.

Please have a look at some photo updates below May 2010:

Measuring the land dimensions before digging holes. Each seedlings must be at least 1 metre apart from each other for the future growth. Bor is using a walking metre to mark where the holes should be dug.

Each hole is about 50cm deep and they are all dug with hand tools.

Our earth is as hard as a rock, so we use strong spades & sharp tools to make holes.

Byamba is inspecting every single dry seedlings before planting them into the holes.

Finally we dug 500 holes to plant seedlings at the nursery field. We have just watered them all. They seem all dry and single sticks now, but they will soon turn green and look beautiful.

Our new trees are elm, seabuckthorn & saxaul. They are the strongest and most suitable trees in the Gobi Desert of Mongolia.

Dusty Dundgobi welcomed all our tiny new seedligs with its dust storm. Our trees have to survive its harsh, windy and extreme dry conditions.

Mr Odsuren from Great Gobi Oasis Tree Planting Project donated some seedlings for us.

Asta Lam from Hongkong came with her friend for two weeks and loved planting trees. She will leave her diary on our website at the end of her visit.

Due to lack of food in the winter months, we lost some trees and shrub roots to some hungry rabbits. We are working to replace the them with new seedlings on its place.

Radnaa is coming to UB this week to purchase some water pipe materials for the nursery. We will update you on our progress.

OUR OTHER PROJECTS

As a tree planting project located in one of the world's dry & remote locations, we have to prioritize our needs to keep it going. It demands constant care, hard work & financial support and there are always a lot to do.

1. Tree Care Procedure - It is the most fundamental part of the project that includes watering all plants, preparing seeds & new branches, making plant beds & keeping weeds out at all times. When a new tree is planted, it is impossible to leave it grow naturally in the extreme weather, so we have to look after them well until they are well matured.

2. Human Resource Management - It is great to look back what we have done so far. Byamba & Radnaa have run the project over 30 years and now would like to find best suited person/organization to pass on the duties. As part of the research, we run classroom & field trainings to expand the understanding of this environmental project.

3. Background Logistics - One of our priorities this year is that we need to invest into 300 metres of water connecting pipes to be fixed in between two water containers before March 2010. Currently, we are carrying water in 10 litres of buckets by hand which is not reccommended by the health & safety. It will help us a lot of time, labour & to keep the water cost down. There are also other small scale investments needed such as gardening tools, water spray system, & benches for public use.

4. Carbon Neutral Programme
– You can reduce your carbon footprints by planting or adopting tress for all purposes such as just to do something good for the environment or for any special occasions including birth, wedding, death, or presents. We keep you updated on the progress of your tree & the project.
