Our project for 2015

Work involved

1. Saxaul seedlings

The saxaul ranges in size from a large shrub to a small tree. The branches of young trees are green and pendulous. It is effective against erosion because it sends out horizontal roots in addition to very deep roots to reach the underground water. Those plants that have reached an age of 25 years are the most effective for erosion control.

Prep of soil, making containers, manually planting tiny seeds, watering individually & keeping weeds off. Transplanting back to earth.

2. Elm seedlings

Help reduce wind, dust & desertification.

Attract rainfall & build suitable condition for biodiversity. Many species of wildlife depend on trees for habitat as they provide food, protection, and homes for many birds and mammals. They improve our air quality by filtering harmful dust and pollutants such as ozone, carbon monoxide, and sulfur dioxide from the air we breathe.

Purchase of branches from other projects, delivery, preparing earth, fertilizing, making plant beds, individually planting and keeping seeds off at all times.

3. Fertilizing the land

by 2 trucks

It is essential to prepare the land with organic fertilizers. It is easy to get hold of animal dungs and mix it with some sand. Loosen the earth for oxygen and water to

go through. There will be a lot weeds growing in the summer and they will be pulled off by hand.

Petrol, rental of truck, driver salary and purchase of animal dungs from nearby countryside.

4. Planting potatoes and maintenance

150 kg

Growing your own vegetable has become extremely important to reduce the increasing dependance on imports from foreign countries even for simple foods. Local people like to consume the products that they have seen them growing in organic ways.

Sourcing good quality of seed potatos, delivery, planting, maintainance, watering, weeds free, and harvesting.

5. Planting carrots and maintenance

The carrot is an excellent vegetable as it has both nutritional and medicinal values which are essential for our optimum health. Carrot contains a very complete nutrition to provide our body the essential enzymes, vitamins and minerals. Carrot also offers an excellence source of beta-carotene. It is essential for people to have carrots available on the local market stalls by all means. Easy to grow in the Gobi earth.

Sourcing good quality of seeds, delivery, planting, maintainance, watering, weeds free, and harvesting.

6. Planting onions and maintenance

Onions are used as the main flavour for all kinds of food in Mongolia. As long as you have some mutton, onion, salt, potato and flour, then you can cook local feasts. There are plenty of good reasons why we should eat onions. Most importantly the buuz and khuushuur are not the same without onions. They are also very suitable to grow and can produce upto 5 times more.

Sourcing good quality of seeds, delivery, planting, maintainance, watering, weeds free, and harvesting.

7. Water purchase

250 tons

Water is very scarce and comes from 30km away through old pipes. Otherwise we would have to dig for 100-200 metres to get water from the ground. Every drop is precious and worth distributing to this dry land. Some parts of the nursery is not reachable due to low pressure of the pipes, so the alternative is to carry water by hand in buckets. Watch where you are going!

Purchase of  water as we pay by metre and sometimes need to rent water trucks. Without water supply, we can't do anything.

8. Staff

5 months

Supporting local economy and training new employees are very important when most of the population live in the capital city. If we can encourage some local staff to work in their own hometown, it will give us great benefits and they attract their friends to settle in the rural area. We get 2 free volunteers from the local governor's office to help our summer work.

Salaries with taxes

9. Admin

5 months

Misc admin work and everything else that is needed when running the project.

10. Equipments

Showels, gloves, buckets, hose pipes etc
